Boubacar Doumbia

Boubacar Doumbia is a legend in Mali. Over two decades ago he began his journey to revive the art of mud cloth, Mali’s traditional textile that has its roots in the 12th century. He went from village to village with his group, researching the traditions and learning his craft.

Not only an artist, Doumbia is also the founder of Atelier Ndomo–a social enterprise created to empower and train uneducated youth in the techniques and secrets of creating mud cloth while also providing them with training in financial responsibility and business management.

Boubacar’s work has been featured in galleries and showrooms across Africa, the United States and Europe. And he worked closely with our team to create a custom collection of original mud cloth designs.

When we asked Boubacar what he wanted people to think or feel when they interacted with his products, his simple response moved us—“I want people to know that it was made by a human”.
