Your background includes both interior design and fashion design. How has your training in fashion design influenced your approach to interior design, and are there specific crossovers between the two disciplines that you find particularly inspiring?

ANDREA RODMAN
My training in fashion design has influenced my approach to interior design, primarily in embracing minimalism, natural materials, and my pursuit of timeless simplicity with a layered design that I like to call quiet luxury. The use of textures and finishes, much like selecting linen, wool, and cashmere for their natural beauty and durability in fashion, is often applied to my interior spaces and my approach to materials, promoting comfort and a tactile experience. I have always had a love for high-quality materials and layering subtle details that create form and structure, rather than opulence in design, and I find this can cross over in both disciplines with a minimalist approach. The minimalist principle of 'less is more' guides both my fashion sense and my direction in interior architecture and is the foundation of inspiration for me.

Can you tell us a bit about your process? How do you balance client preferences with your own design vision to create harmonious and personalized spaces?

ANDREA RODMAN
Each project is rooted in the discovery of our clients' lives, who they are, and the vibrant and colorful story of their dreams and visions for their home. Key inspiration images are shared with us at the start of the project to convey the style direction they are attracted to. We discuss the elements that drew them to each inspiration, or often it's one of our projects that inspired them. I see each project as a fun, collaborative process, where our clients become part of the design team in a way. We typically focus on elements and details as well as the general feel in the images shared by the clients, and then research how to blend those elements to create a harmonious vision for each space in the home. This captures a shared vision along with our approach to design.

Are there any surprising design styles or specific colour trends that you see emerging today?

ANDREA RODMAN
I love the curves that are everywhere these days, showing through in accessories, furniture, interiors, and architecture. I am a big fan of nature and see curves as an expression of the feminine and more organic, creating softness and comfort in a home.

Returning to Canada after spending five years abroad, you chose Vancouver as your home. How has the local environment and culture influenced your design aesthetic, and what unique elements do you incorporate into your designs that reflect the essence of beautiful British Columbia?

ANDREA RODMAN
We're fortunate to enjoy a profound connection with nature here in B.C., where the outdoor life is truly remarkable, characterized by our proximity to the ocean and mountains. West Coast design beautifully reflects this connection, embracing subdued tones and textures reminiscent of our surroundings – from soft stone hues to sandy tones, even mirroring the moodiness of our winter skies. This affinity for natural, soft, and muted monochromatic tones captures the essence of West Coast design for me. It imparts a sense of tranquility and serenity to our homes, making them feel calm and peaceful.

Constantly seeking new inspiration is a key aspect of your design philosophy. Can you share some of the current trends or emerging concepts in interior design that excite and inspire you?

ANDREA RODMAN
I am always looking at the new work of talented designers globally, whether it's architecture, interiors, or furniture, and seeing what my favorite designers are up to. These days, I am definitely inspired by Japanese design more and more; the simplicity and warmth behind their design approach often capture my admiration and inspire me with their approach to joinery and craftsmanship. I am also a big fan of Japandi design, which blends Japanese design influences with Scandinavian design, two of my favorite aesthetics.

Sustainability is often interconnected with wellness in design. How do you create spaces that not only promote environmental sustainability but also contribute to the well-being and comfort of the individuals who inhabit them?

ANDREA RODMAN
I view a well-designed home as a conduit to well-being—a sanctuary for relaxation, rest, and nurturing for ourselves and our families. It's a retreat that fosters creativity, productivity, and peace. Our approach emphasizes client-specific needs and preferences, aiming to enhance daily living by integrating functional and storage solutions for a clutter-free, peaceful environment. We prioritize the selection of natural materials and focus on sustainable practices, including low-VOC and non-toxic materials. We also like to look at each vendor's story and production methods, as there is often a lot of thought put into having a lighter environmental footprint, whether through their processes or production methods.

The landscape of design trends is ever-changing. How do you navigate this and ensure your work remains timeless?

ANDREA RODMAN
I like to adopt an approach that emphasizes natural materials, capturing a sense of softness and calm, and blending warmth and comfort into the home. With millwork and cabinetry, we prefer a more integrated approach that remains understated and simpler, while layering in unique and interesting details. I find that homes designed with this approach often stand the test of time and stay relevant, steering clear of loud trends and avoiding being overly creative and busy.

What’s next for you professionally and what are you looking forward to in life?

ANDREA RODMAN
Currently, I am working on a passion project on Salt Spring Island with my family. We are in the design phase, planning to build a farm based on permaculture practices, complete with a couple of cottages, a main home, and a glamping setup. It's been a significant process so far, but I am looking forward to our first home on the property being completed, welcoming animals to the land, sharing the experience with friends, family, and guests, growing our own food, and fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Back in 2014, I made a solo pilgrimage to Naoshima, an island west of Osaka, known for its art. It has amazing museums designed by Tadao Ando, a favorite architect of mine, and there’s various art installations and art houses scattered around the island.
