MOROCCO MAKERS: The Story Behind Our Camel wool Blankets

Morocco is having a moment—not just in design circles, but across travel, wellness, and global aesthetics. And it’s no wonder why. This is a country of contrasts and craftsmanship, where the past is never left behind—it’s carried forward in every carved detail, every woven thread, every quiet act of creation. Marrakech hums with energy, its winding streets lined with design studios, hidden boutiques, and restaurants that spill into candlelit courtyards. But beyond the city’s surface, something deeper reveals itself: a quiet lineage of artisans still working with the same materials and methods their ancestors once did. No mass production. No shortcuts. Just heritage, preserved by hand.

Travel a little further north, and you’ll find Fes—a city known for its historic medina, where artisans from surrounding regions gather to share their work with the world. And it’s here, in the heart of that winding maze, that we met Hassan. Surrounded by sacks of rugs and blankets made from sustainably harvested camel wool. Hassan didn’t speak a word of English, yet his quiet kindness and pride in his work said everything.
HASSAN | WEAVER OF MOROCCO
Hassan is a generational weaver from Morocco, carrying forward his family’s rich legacy of craftsmanship from their own workshop. His designs are brought to life using camel wool, a sustainable and resilient material that has been valued for centuries. Unlike the many stalls filled with pieces tailored for tourists, Hassan’s blankets stood out immediately—not only for their quality and design, but for their authenticity.
Deeply tied to the landscape itself, the wool carries the essence of place—and Hassan brings that to life through his craft. He infuses each blanket with a modern aesthetic, blending traditional techniques passed down through generations with contemporary designs that resonate today.

For Hassan and his family, this craft is more than just a livelihood—it’s a legacy, a way of life, and a means to support their community. Every dirham earned from his work has gone back into his household, paying for his children’s education and preserving a tradition passed down through generations. The Wool, The Process
WHAT IS CAMEL WOOL
Camel wool is harvested with care, typically during the camel’s natural shedding season, making it an eco-friendly and sustainable fiber. Known for its warmth, breathability, and durability, camel wool’s hollow fibers help regulate body temperature—keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Naturally hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking, it’s a high-performing material that feels just as beautiful as it functions.
IS CAMEL WOOL WARMER THAN SHEEP WOOL?
Yes, camel wool is often warmer and more insulating than traditional sheep’s wool. Its unique hollow structure traps heat more effectively, making it ideal for colder climates and desert nights alike.

WHY IS CAMEL WOOL SO RARE?
Camel wool is produced in small quantities, typically gathered by nomadic herders during the seasonal shedding period. Its rarity is tied to this natural harvesting process, along with the labor-intensive steps of cleaning, spinning, and hand-weaving. Each blanket requires time, skill, and tradition—making camel wool a true luxury textile rooted in heritage.
A FOUNDER FAVORITE
Part of our larger Morocco Collection, these camel wool blankets are among Founder Treana Peake’s favourite discoveries from her recent sourcing trip. While Hassan’s work doesn’t make up a full artisan capsule, his story—and his craft—left such a mark that we brought back as many pieces as we could carry.
At Obakki, we don’t design for artisans—we partner with them. We ensure sustainable practices, direct collaboration, and fair compensation are embedded in every product we share. When design is shaped by the people and traditions of a place, the result is always extraordinary. Hassan’s work is proof of that.

“I left Fes with armfuls of his blankets, but also with something far more lasting: a connection to a man whose work embodies Morocco’s textile heritage. We exchanged WhatsApp numbers, and I promised to visit his family workshop when I return. In a country where so much is now produced for visitors, ending the trip with Hassan reminded me of what I had been searching for all along — the real Morocco, held in the hands of its makers.”
