Kitui Basket Weavers
Our eco-friendly baskets are handmade by the women of the Kitui Basket Weavers, a cooperative in Kenya. Using locally sourced sisal fiber, these artisans craft durable, sustainable baskets that reflect their rich cultural traditions. Sisal, a resilient material, is harvested, processed, and hand-rolled into cord before being dyed and woven into beautiful baskets. In addition to supporting the artisans, this initiative also partners with sustainable sisal farmers, contributing to the local economy and strengthening agricultural trade in the region.
For the women in this cooperative, weaving is more than just a craft; it’s a vital source of income. Many of these artisans are widows or single mothers who rely on their weaving skills to support their families, send their children to school, and provide for themselves. By purchasing their baskets, customers contribute directly to improving the lives of these women and their families, helping them achieve financial independence.
The baskets, created with soul and care, are not just products but symbols of resilience and empowerment. As one artisan shared, "We make these baskets to uplift our families. When someone buys a basket from us, they can be proud knowing they are supporting women who strive for independence and a better future."
