Makoto Komatsu
Makoto Komatsu is a master of transformation—his work fuses Japanese craftsmanship and Scandinavian simplicity into an unmistakably sculptural vision. Born in Tokyo in 1943, he studied craft design at Musashino Art University before spending time in Sweden working at the Gustavsberg factory.
Over five decades, Komatsu’s bold, tactile pieces in porcelain and glass have earned global acclaim and now reside in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum. From his celebrated “Crinkle” series of hand-crumpled glasses to his porcelain vessels that shift between function and art, his work asks us to reconsider ordinary objects as moments of quiet rebellion.
