Herat Glassblowers
In the ancient city of Herat, glassblowing has been passed down through generations of one family. Today, brothers Ghulam Sekhi and Ustad Nasrullah, alongside Nasrullah’s son Khairullah, are among the last remaining traditional glassblowers practicing this craft in the region.
Taught by their fathers and grandfathers from a young age, glassblowing is more than a profession — it is a family legacy. It’s not only their work, it’s their history. Despite decades of conflict and a decline in local demand, they continue with deep pride and responsibility, determined to pass their knowledge to the next generation. For this family, keeping the fire lit is an act of devotion — to their ancestors, to their students, and to one of Afghanistan’s oldest living craft traditions.
