The Tadelakt Potters of Marrakesh
In Marrakesh, three artisans—Zakaria, Abdel, and Mohammed—carry forward the ancient Moroccan art of Tadelakt. More than a technique, it’s a philosophy of patience and connection, where clay, lime, and water are transformed through rhythm, touch, and time. Each artisan plays a vital role: Abdel and Mohammed shape the terracotta forms, while Zakaria layers them with natural lime plaster, polishing each surface by hand with a river stone and finishing it with soft soap for a smooth, living sheen.
Their craft reflects Marrakesh itself—earthy, luminous, and deeply rooted in tradition. Passed down through generations, Tadelakt was once used to adorn palaces; today, their work preserves its spirit, giving new life to an art form that bridges Morocco’s past and present through the language of texture, collaboration, and devotion.
