Story

Ana Beatriz follows her ancestral heritage and craft- her mother has dedicated more than three decades to the art of Oaxacan pottery, learning herself from Ana's grandfather. These pieces are born from ancient traditions that have been passed down through generations.

The family's work in clay is fire and water and is described in the indigenous language of Nahuatl as Atlachinolli or ‘burned water' – the art of combining opposites, combining opposing forces, to create beauty. The clay pieces are formed with water and are born of fire. Truly, this is beauty through clay.

Ana Beatriz

Ana Beatriz Martinez continues her family’s generational legacy of Oaxacan pottery, a tradition first passed down from her grandfather to her mother, and now to her. Her work is rooted in the ancient philosophy of Atlachinolli—“burned water” in Nahuatl—symbolizing the union of opposites: fire and water, man and woman, balance and creation.

Working alongside her family, Ana Beatriz gathers clay from two sacred mines: one yielding soft, flexible earth known as the “woman’s clay,” and another offering strong white clay representing the “man.” The two are combined in perfect harmony to form each piece.

Her process remains entirely organic and transparent, shaped by ancestral techniques that honour the earth. Each vessel embodies duality, tradition, and the quiet rhythm of generations who continue to create beauty through the meeting of fire and water.
