Brushed Wool Cushion Cover | Grey Stripe
HANDMADE IN MEXICO
Our organic cushion covers are woven with wool from the sacred sheep of our Chiapas artisans in Mexico. No dyes are used – the colours are the natural pigments of the sheep’s wool.
Story
Our Weavers of Chiapas live in a community that is over 2,000 years old and one of the last living examples of true Mayan culture. It is considered one of the most important communities of its kind, not just by size but by Mayan customs and practices that are long lost in other parts of Mexico. This village was always resolutely independent: they resisted the Spanish when they invaded Chiapas in 1522, and they later staged the famous 1869 rebellion that kept colonization from spreading to their community.
Sheep are sacred here and graze freely around the small community outside San Cristobal. And the sheep are only used for wool – never killed. It is from the wool of these sheep that our 100% natural cushion covers are woven with the techniques of the ancestors. They are a work of art – and a labour of love.

Their artisanal textile process is quite complex and includes spinning the wool with a wooden spindle into threads of specific tension and thickness to form both the weft and the warp for the backstrap loom. This process is additionally accompanied by a series of complex steps for washing, carding, and felting the wool.
