KEEPING THE FLAME
“My candles are hand-poured, layer by layer. You can feel the love that goes into each and every one of them.”
In Teotitlán del Valle, Mexico, Doña Viviana Alávez continues her family’s generations-old tradition of handcrafting beeswax candles. Since childhood, she has poured her heart into this luminous craft—creating each candle with patience, devotion, and artistry. Her work has supported not only her family but her entire village for decades.
A LIVING HERITAGE
Light shaped by love, passed down through generations.
Now in her eighth decade, Viviana’s workshop has become a place of living heritage. As she prepares to pass her techniques to her two sons, she continues to innovate within her lineage. Her now-signature rose and flower-shaped candles reimagine a centuries-old craft, transforming everyday devotion into timeless beauty.
THE LIGHT OF TRADITION
From village rituals to modern celebrations.
Viviana’s creations illuminate Mexico’s most meaningful moments—weddings, offerings, and celebrations of life. Each piece preserves the warmth of tradition through every flame, connecting people to the rhythm of family, faith, and craft. What began as sacred offerings now shines as a symbol of culture, resilience, and enduring artistry.
