José learned to work with clay at a young age, developing a deep connection to the material that would guide him through one of the most transformative moments of his life. When he lost his sight, he turned to sculpture as a way to remember the face of his wife, creating her portrait in clay each day. This practice grew into a body of work that blends love, imagination and memory.
His pieces often merge her likeness with elements from the stories he heard as a child, where mermaids were described as the most beautiful beings in the world. These influences shaped the whimsical forms he is known for today. Each sculpture reflects his ability to see beyond sight, working with intuition, touch and an enduring sense of affection. José’s artistry is a testament to the power of devotion and creativity.

Our artisan partner, José Garcia, began sculpting faces after losing his sight, forming each one from Oaxacan clay entirely by touch — first to remember his wife’s face. That memory and care are what truly bring these pieces to life.

The story of Jose Garcia warmed my heart so I purchased the male & female planters.
The quality & detail is beautifully executed. I planted geraniums in them for Summer. I think it would be nice to have multiples & hang on a wall. Planning to buy another set for gifts.
