MEET The Enriquez Family
Clay on Ancestral Ground
“We shape the same earth our ancestors walked.”
Atzompa has been a center of pottery since Zapotec times, and the Enriquez family continues that deep tradition on their own land. Smoke from wood-fired kilns still drifts through the village as it has for generations. Their clay is dug locally, shaped slowly by hand, and guided by knowledge passed through their family for centuries.
A Family of Animal Sculptors
“Each creature carries a spirit of its own.”
Known throughout the region for their sculpted animals, the Enriquez family brings clay to life through expressive forms shaped entirely by hand. Birds, horses, and other creatures emerge from the earth with personality and movement. These figures reflect both the natural world that surrounds their village and the imagination passed down through generations of makers.
The Sacred Pochote Tree
“The tree that holds memory in its roots.”
Alongside their animal forms, the family is also known for sculpting the pochote tree, a sacred symbol in Oaxaca associated with protection, life, and continuity. Each tree is built branch by branch from open-fired clay, carrying the marks of flame and ash. These sculptural pieces speak to the deep spiritual and environmental connection that shapes their work.
