MADE BY MANY HANDS

"Each piece is an echo of the past."

In San José de Gracia, Michoacán, ceramic making belongs to the community. More than five artisan families contribute generations of knowledge, each bringing an intimate understanding of clay, glaze, fire, and form. Their work reflects a deeply Mexican tradition of collective making, where skill is shared across families and every object carries the subtle marks of the hands that shaped it.

CLAY AS LANGUAGE

"Design is more than shaping an object."

Across Mexico, craft is a language passed through hands rather than written down. Clay holds the memory of place, family, and generations of practice, transformed slowly through touch and fire. Here, making is not simply about producing an object. It is a way of carrying culture forward, preserving the knowledge, rhythms, and human connection embedded within the material itself.

TRADITION, MOVING FORWARD

"Our goal is to preserve tradition."

Designer José Bañuelos works alongside these artisan families to explore new possibilities for their extraordinary ceramic knowledge. Contemporary forms and functions emerge through collaboration, while the integrity of the handwork remains unchanged. Rather than separating tradition from modern design, José helps create a space where the two can meet, allowing an enduring Mexican craft to evolve while remaining firmly connected to its roots.
