VESSELS OF HER MAKING

"In Zipiajo, pottery is the language of women."

Maceta Pez Clay Planter Planters Mano De Tierra Obakki

In San Pedro Zipiajo, pottery is a woman’s art—passed down through generations as a sacred form of identity and expression. From childhood, girls learn the rhythms of earth and fire, shaping clay with both skill and intuition. Each vessel embodies not just beauty, but belonging—a living bond between land, lineage, and craft.

A LIFELONG MUSE

“One artisan. One animal. A lifelong bond.”

Among Zipiajo’s most profound traditions is the sacred pairing between artisan and animal. Early in her journey, each woman chooses a single creature as her lifelong muse. From that moment, only she may shape that form, and when she passes, the right to create it dies with her—its spirit forever tied to her hands.

FIRED IN TRADITION

"We don’t just shape the clay—we carry forward the voice of our ancestors."

High in the mountains of Michoacán, the women of Zipiajo preserve an ancient pottery tradition that has endured for centuries. Each piece is shaped by hand and fired in open-air bonfires fueled by wood, straw, and cow dung—a process as raw as it is poetic. Every vessel carries both earth and soul, linking past and present through fire.
