What is the difference between East vs West Shea Butter?

Did you know there are two distinct types of Shea butter? Nilotica Shea Butter is native to East Africa and known for its exceptional healing properties.

While most people know that Shea trees are native to Africa (bearing their annual fruit, or nuts from which the oil is expressed), many are unaware that there are two distinct types of Shea. Vitellaria Nilotica is native to East Africa and Vitellaria Paradox (or Butyrospermum parkii) is found in West Africa.

Sustainable Sourcing from Uganda

Our Nilotica Shea is sourced from women-led co-ops in Uganda. We ensure the finest organic Nilotica Shea reaches your skincare routine from the most sustainable sources.

Although the shea found in West Africa is far more popular and prevalent, Nilotica shea (found only in South Sudan and Northern Uganda) is the more rare and highly valued of the two because of its superior moisturizing properties. The good news? We’ve partnered with women-led co-ops in Uganda to wild-harvest and process the finest organic Nilotica shea on the market.

Nutrient-Rich Composition

In addition to Vitamins A, E, K, and an abundance of Catechins (the same powerful antioxidant found in green tea), Nilotica shea contains 25% more oleic acid (one of the essential fatty acids) than standard African shea butter. Oleic acid is what gives shea butter its outstanding moisturizing capabilities and silky smooth feel, making it easier to spread and absorb into the skin or hair.

Versatile Benefits for Skin and Hair

Shea butter is a natural conditioner for all hair types and has been used for centuries to soothe dry scalp or dandruff. This secret ingredient is often found in curly hair treatments because of its emolliating qualities. It locks in moisture without leaving hair greasy or heavy, which makes shea fantastic for protecting curly hair against the weather. Even the driest of follicles will benefit from rubbing a small amount of our Nilotica into damaged split ends.

These fatty acid components of shea also help protect the skin's natural oil barrier, which is essential for keeping skin hydrated and plump. Shea butter is fantastic for firming and strengthening skin because it increases elasticity by aiding natural collagen production in skin.
