RRRES: THE Oaxacan Studio Rooted in Contemporary Design

Javier Reyes, founder of rrres studio, is a Latin American designer originally from the Dominican Republic. He left his life behind to immerse himself in the world of Mexican artisan design. Now based in Oaxaca, his practice is shaped by proximity — to place, to material, and to the artisans whose knowledge has been carried forward through generations. Discover how environment, material, and maker come together to shape each piece within rrres studio.
Oaxacan Craft Shaped by Place and Process
Since 2017, the studio has worked across disciplines, creating handmade objects in close collaboration with artisans across the region — from rugs and textiles to ceramics and sculptural forms. Rooted in contemporary Mexican design, each piece exists between tradition and evolution, where form is not imposed but uncovered through process, dialogue, and material.
This same philosophy extends beyond the work itself. The name rrres is drawn from the Catalan word for “nothing,” intentionally left undefined, even in how it is spoken. Just as the studio resists imposing form onto material, it resists fixing meaning through name. What emerges instead is something shaped through process: open, collaborative, and continually evolving.

Before establishing his studio, Reyes spent time living alongside artisan families throughout Oaxaca. He learned not through observation alone, but through participation. This experience became foundational. Not as research, but as relationship.
Oaxaca's cultural landscape, long defined by traditional craftsmanship in Mexico, continues to inform the studio's direction. Rather than drawing from it at a distance, Reyes works within it, allowing each collaboration to unfold through the knowledge already held by the artisans themselves.
Designing Through Artisan Collaboration
At rrres, the process begins with listening. Each new collaboration is approached not as instruction, but as conversation — an exploration of what is already possible, and what might emerge through shared experimentation. Artisans are given the space to interpret, adapt, and contribute their own perspective, resulting in work that feels both grounded and unexpected.

This model of artisan collaboration shifts the role of the maker from executor to creative partner. It moves beyond authorship toward something more collective, where outcomes are not predetermined but discovered through process.
Mexican Craft Shaped Through Textiles, Ceramics, and Form
The studio’s work spans multiple materials — from Zapotec wool rugs and cotton textiles to Mexican ceramics, palm-based forms, and sculptural objects. Each medium carries its own history, technique, and rhythm.

Defined by geometric and abstract forms, the pieces exist somewhere between functional object and sculpture. A rug becomes more than a surface. A vessel holds not only material, but the imprint of time, gesture, and repetition. Through this lens, material becomes a language that communicates both heritage and contemporary expression.
Craft as Continuity in Sustainable Artisan Design
In a world shaped by immediacy, the work of artisan-made objects asks for something different: patience. Each piece carries a timeline — 20, 30, sometimes 60 days in the making. Not as a marker of inefficiency, but as a reflection of care, skill, and process. Time, here, is not compressed, but preserved. This understanding invites a shift in perspective — from consumption to connection. From object to origin.

This approach is grounded in long-term relationships. Working closely with the same artisans over time, the studio builds trust through ongoing collaboration — ideas shared, adapted, and carried forward together. Each piece becomes part of a larger continuum, shaped not by a single author but by collective knowledge and lived experience.
At its core, the work reflects a commitment to sustainable artisan design, one that values process as much as outcome and recognises artisans not as symbols of tradition but as active contributors shaping its future. In this way, rrres contributes to a broader dialogue around Mexican artisan design, rooted in partnership, material integrity, and the enduring value of handmade work. Each object holds more than form. It carries a story of exchange between people, place, and time.
