Master of Barro Negro
Crafted by hand, shaped by heritage

Amando Pedro is a master artisan from San Bartolo Coyotepec, a village renowned for its distinctive black clay pottery. Taught by his great-grandmother and influenced by Japanese ceramic techniques, Amando brings generations of knowledge to every piece. Working with his family in a home atelier, each form is shaped entirely by hand—no wheel, just skill, patience, and tradition.
Built by Community
A collective effort with deep roots

Amando’s studio includes 13 artisans from 11 local families who work together to preserve and advance this ancient Zapotec and Mixtec tradition. Each piece created supports the livelihoods of these families and keeps the Barro Negro legacy alive. Purchasing their work sustains a cultural heritage that’s passed hand to hand, generation to generation.

Oaxaca’s Signature Clay
Rare materials, time-honoured technique

Barro Negro is known for its deep black hue, created by a unique oxygen-reduction firing method in underground kilns. The clay, found only in this region, gives each piece its smooth texture and smoky finish. These sculptural forms are organic, elemental, and instantly recognizable—icons of Oaxacan tradition made for modern living.
