BORN TO MAKE

"I just wanted to make things."

Raised among artists in Alberta and on Salt Spring Island, Janaki Larsen grew up believing creativity was simply part of everyday life. The daughter of a potter and painter and a painter and stonemason, she spent her childhood in studios, surrounded by materials and conversations about making. It was while studying at Emily Carr that clay became her language, beginning a practice rooted less in theory than in the instinct to create.

BEAUTY IN IMPERFECTION

"I love dirt. Everything about it."

Janaki works intuitively with clay, allowing the material to retain its irregularities rather than forcing it toward uniformity. Every vessel is hand-thrown and hand-glazed, with gentle lines, quiet surfaces, and subtle differences from one piece to the next. Influenced by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, she finds beauty in objects that feel weathered, imperfect, and alive with the traces of the hands that made them.

Janaki’s work moves quietly between function and sculpture. Bowls, plates, and vessels are designed to be used, stacked, touched, and changed by daily life, gathering their own history over time. Her restrained forms have found their way into homes and acclaimed restaurants around the world, yet the intention remains deeply personal: to make objects that feel connected to the earth, the hand, and the rituals of living.
