Story

What makes Zipiajo pottery truly unique is that each artisan selects one animal as her lifelong muse, and only she can create pieces featuring that creature. This not only preserves individuality within the collective but also turns each animal motif into a signature of the woman who shaped it. Styled in a home, these pieces add soul and story—whether perched on a shelf or displayed on a table, they invite conversation and carry with them the spirit of a living tradition rooted in identity and craft.

Coeneo, Michoacán

The Artisans of San Pedro Zipiajo

Nestled in the municipality of Coeneo, Michoacán, San Pedro Zipiajo is one of 35 indigenous communities dedicated to preserving the Purépecha language and artisanal traditions. Pottery is at the heart of this community, crafted entirely by hand through ancient pre-Hispanic techniques. Each piece is molded with inspiration drawn from Mexican fauna and brought to life using open-air firing methods—bonfires fueled by wood, cow dung, and straw. This traditional process lends every creation its unique character and resilience.

In Zipiajo, pottery is an art reserved for women, passed down through generations as a mark of cultural heritage. Within the community's collective of artisans, each woman claims the right to craft pieces inspired by a specific animal—a legacy respected and preserved over time. Until recently, the collective was led by the brave and talented "Nana Elvia," who championed their work on national and international stages. Her legacy endures in the hands of the women who continue to mold, fire, and shape the spirit of their land into timeless ceramic art.
