In Santa María Atzompa, clay carries generations of knowledge. For centuries, pottery was largely the work of women, while men took on the physical labour of gathering and transporting the earth used to make it. Juan learned the craft from his mother. Today, he creates alongside his wife and daughter, Vianney, part of a new generation reshaping not the tradition itself, but who is able to carry it forward.

TRADITION IN MOTION

"Traditions are not museum pieces, but living elements."

The family believes that preserving a craft means allowing it to evolve. Clay once carried home by donkey now arrives by truck. Ancient knowledge meets cleaner silhouettes, high-temperature firing, natural smoking techniques, and unexpected influences from as far away as Japan. Yet every piece remains connected to Atzompa, shaped slowly by hand and guided by the same relationship between earth, fire, intuition, and time.

For Vianney and her family, the future of craft is as much about people as pottery. Their hope is to grow their workshop into a cooperative where women from the surrounding community can learn, create, earn an income, and remain close to their families. It is a vision of tradition as something generous: knowledge received from one generation, strengthened by the next, and ultimately shared with many more.
