Santa María Rayón, Mexico
Esteban Alonso
Esteban Alonso began turning wood at just 13 years old, following a craft practiced by his great-grandfather, grandfather, and father in Santa María Rayón, Mexico. Today, he continues his family’s tradition of making the molinillo, the wooden whisk used to froth Mexican chocolate.
Each piece is turned and decorated by hand. Its carved rings help introduce air into the chocolate, while the darkened details are created through wood-on-wood friction rather than paint. For Esteban, every molinillo carries generations of ingenuity, knowledge, and Mexican tradition.
