Hatay Weavers
For five generations, our artisan partners in Turkey have woven sustainable textiles on century-old looms in Anatolia. Led by Ali, and designed by Mizar & Alcor, the family hand-weaves fabrics from certified organic cotton and linen, warping the yarns and tying the tassels by hand. These lightweight textiles are eco-friendly, requiring less energy to wash, and are crafted using materials that meet the strict safety standards of Standard 100 Oeko-Tex.
In February 2023, devastating earthquakes struck Southern Turkey, destroying over 500,000 buildings. Many artisans and their families tragically lost their lives, while others were left homeless. The weaving studio was severely damaged, with most looms and stock buried beneath the rubble. Despite this immense loss, the artisans showed remarkable resilience, salvaging some century-old looms and beginning the rebuilding process.
Obakki and Mizar & Alcor stepped in to provide essential support, including emergency housing, food security, and assistance with restoring the workshop. Revitalizing the textile sector is vital for the community’s economic recovery, and our collective efforts are helping over 60 families rebuild their livelihoods.
