Story

Julio’s clay pieces speak directly to the heart of Oaxaca state, where there’s magic in the mud. The pottery is different in each region, with different colourings, different processes, and different clays – all with unique characteristics. Artisans here dig their own clay, form their own pieces, and fire their own wares, all on the shoulders of their ancestors who walked this land before them.

Julio creates inspired pottery – elegant, artistic pottery that is deeply in touch with the earth – and ancestors – from which it came.

Meet Our Artisan Partner

Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec, Mexico

Julio Martinez Diaz

Julio Martinez Diaz, a skilled artisan from Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec in the Sierra Mixe region of Oaxaca, carries on the ancient pottery traditions of his ancestors. This small mountain village, home to fewer than 10,000 people, is four hours from Oaxaca City, nestled in the Sierra Madre Mountain range. The Mixe people are known for preserving their rich cultural heritage, including their unwritten indigenous language, which has survived through generations.

Julio is passionate about maintaining these traditions while also working to uplift his community. His vision is to establish a community art and pottery center in Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec, where local artisans can come together to preserve and celebrate their craft. In this region, artisans dig their own clay, form each piece by hand, and fire their work using techniques passed down through centuries.

Julio's pottery reflects the deep connection between his craft, the earth, and his ancestors. His elegant, artistic pieces are inspired by the natural beauty of the land and the timeless practices of those who came before him. Obakki is honoured to partner with Julio, supporting his vision of a thriving artisan community that honours ancient traditions while building a sustainable future for the next generation of potters.
