Story

Kurinuki is a Japanese word that translates to 'carving out' or 'hollowing out'. This means that the pieces are hand formed from a solid block of clay that is carved to make the void that holds the contents, rather than the walls being wheel thrown or slab built. The result is that each piece is completely unique, raw looking, primitive even in its appearance, and the heavy bases give a sense of weighty importance when holding it in your hands. Yunomi is a Japanese drinking vessel that is taller than it is wide, with no handle.

Made OF Australia's signature series of functional stoneware ceramics - twice fired, once to full vitrification for durability and longevity, then again while sealed in special containers (called saggars) with native Australian flora and organics from indigenous fauna (organic materials like snakeskin, emu and crocodile eggshell, and goose feathers etc.). Once vapourised, the naturally occurring oxides and minerals released by the flames fuse with the surface of the clay, creating unique and unrepeatable patterns and markings on the surface of the clay...it's pure alchemy!

Made OF Australia

Everything that comes from this ceramic art studio – from the Australian clays to the native flora and fauna used in the firing, is derived directly from the landscape. Pieces are not only made in Australia – they are made of Australia. Organic, indigenous materials such as snakeskin, eggshells from emus and crocodiles and goose feathers are fused with the surface of the clay.

No two pieces from Made of Australia can ever be the same. While similar and complementary in size and shape, the pattern on each piece will always have its own unique character and markings, as does everything in nature.
