HANDMADE IN PORTUGAL

These sun-washed linen pillow covers are upcycled treasures inspired by the vintage cereal bags of Portugal.

Story

The municipality of Miranda do Douro sits at the Spanish border in Europe alongside the Douro River. This region in northeastern Portugal near the oldest border in Europe is home to forgotten treasures: Linen cereal bags and the women and looms who weave them.

These pillow covers are kept as natural and original as possible when upcycled and repurposed. Traditionally, most cereal sacks were woven in the natural colour of the fibres (white and grey), but the bags uncovered in this region are full of bold colours, making them unique in Portugal. Using the side that was exposed to the sun’s rays provides for their now-muted colours, which fade naturally with the strong Portuguese sunshine.

Matilde is 85 years old and started weaving at the young age of 15, taught by her mother. Who was taught by her mother before her. Throughout her life, she wove hundreds of cereal bags and pillow covers. In her small workroom, she has a big wooden loom by the window. It’s an impressive construction, hand-built by her husband as a gift after marriage.

The linen cereal bags that Matilde grew up weaving are what inspired our pillow covers. These covers are kept as natural and original as possible when upcycled and repurposed. Indeed, the once-forgotten treasures have a second chance at life. And with them, so do the stories, traditions, and people behind them.
