Story

Forged in the heart of Nairobi by our artisan partner, Sylvester, our debut collection of gold or silver plated jewelry has been made with a base metal of 100% upcycled brass—discarded taps, padlocks and old coins that would have otherwise ended up in the junkyard.

Sustainability is always our priority at Obakki, so we love the concept of taking something forgotten and turning it into something beautiful and new.

Sylvester Ochieng

Sylvester, a dedicated blacksmith from Nairobi, grew up with a fascination for metalwork, inspired by the stories of his father's craftsmanship. From a young age, he embraced the trade to honor his father's legacy and, today, as a father of six, blacksmithing remains his profound passion and livelihood. His small workshop in the heart of Nairobi is a testament to his commitment to traditional techniques and sustainable practices.

Using recycled brass, Sylvester creates jewelry that is both environmentally friendly and modern. He plates his pieces with 14K gold or silver, ensuring each item is not only unique but also a product of upcycled materials. His dedication to sustainability is evident in every piece he crafts, reflecting a deep respect for both the environment and his heritage.

Sylvester's vision extends beyond his own work. He dreams of establishing a center to teach blacksmithing to underprivileged youth, believing that by sharing this skill, he can empower others to build better lives for themselves.
